01 Campus
142 Kandy Road, Kadawatha

A house that kept growing.

Nothing here was master-planned. Every room was added when a stage needed it, and never faster than we could staff it — which is why the building makes sense from the inside even though it makes none from the road.

02 The rooms
Six things worth seeing

What is actually here.

A bright activity room
Four bright activity rooms One for each stage, each with low shelves, natural light and a door straight into the garden. Everything a small child needs is within their own reach, and nothing is locked.
The garden and play court
Garden & play court A shaded court, a running strip, a sandpit and a genuine garden the children dig in and plant. Shade over all of it, which in Kadawatha is not a luxury.
The reading corner
The reading corner A wall of picture books in English and Sinhala, cushions, and a daily story. Sitting on the floor is permitted; it is practically encouraged.
The art and messy-play studio
Art & messy-play studio A room with a floor you are allowed to ruin. Paint, dough, sand, water and print — the mess that early learning actually needs, kept out of the classrooms.
The day-care rest room
Day-care & rest room A calm, dim room with mats and cots for the afternoon rest, and a quiet corner for the long day. Where the full-day children eat, sleep and settle.
The hall
The hall Assembly, music and movement, the concert and Sports Day prizes. It seats the whole school, which — given the size of the school — is exactly the point.
03 Care
The unglamorous part

Safety, food, and getting home.

None of this appears in a prospectus photograph, and all of it is what you will actually think about at eleven o’clock on a Tuesday.

Getting in and out

One gate, staffed from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm. Named collection only — we will not release a child to someone who is not on your list, however awkward that conversation gets, and it does get awkward.

Food

Morning children bring their own snack and eat it together, laying and clearing the table themselves. Day-care children get a cooked lunch and an afternoon snack, prepared fresh. No sweets, no fizzy drinks, no exceptions.

If someone is unwell

A sick room, staff with paediatric first aid on site at all times, and a doctor four minutes away on Kandy Road. You get a phone call, not a note in the bag.

The van

Our own drivers, employed by the school, with an attendant on every van, covering Kadawatha, Ragama, Kiribathgoda and Nugegoda. They are the first Headway adult your child sees each morning — which we think matters.

Photographs only tell you so much

Come and walk through it.

Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the school is working. It takes about half an hour and nobody will read you a prospectus.
